While winding down or hyping up for adventure, you’ll mostly find me in a fitness class, most prominantly exploring the fitness scene in London. I truly believe that some of the best views in this world are only accessible via some moderate to serious legwork, so I always want to make sure I’m fit enough to hike through national parks, climb mountains or spend hours out in the ocean while learning to surf.
And it’s not only for getting in shape physically, but also to prepare mentally. When you constantly push yourself through tough fitness classes, you’ll find the mental strain of that 11 hour hike or the endurance of staying out for more hours surfing that little bit easier. A bit like muscle memory but for the brain!
So here are my favourite fitness spots in London right now. Prepare to get your heart-rate seriously raised and sweat like a beast… Ready, set, sweat!
Ministry Does Fitness
GOOD FOR: Functional fitness training like you’ve never known before… with not one but TWO coaches present, every single class is different and is sure to get you pushing your butt busting self to new levels of brilliance! If you want to work hard and not feel like you’re clock watching, THIS is the class for you.
LOCATION: Elephant & Castle
PRICE: £16 per class (other options available if you bulk buy a set of classes)
AMENITIES: At time of writing, there a 3 showers and a small changing room with 2 hairdryers and 1 pair of hair straighteners. Towels are available to rent for £1. Sweat hand towels are free for the class.
GOOD FOR: All the fun, quirky vibes, while shedding some serious sweat. My favourite classes here are TRX and Vinyassa yoga but I also tried Rebounding (basically aerobics on little trampolines) and had loads of fun! I just prefer the functional stuff usually so don’t tend to book too many like that.
LOCATION: Multiple locations across central London including Victoria, Shoreditch, Kings Cross, Queens Park. Keep an eye out for new locations coming in 2018!
PRICE: Ranging from £12 – £20 per class (other options available if you bulk buy a set of classes)
AMENITIES: Vary from studio to studio, check beforehand with the studio you decide to visit.
GOOD FOR: HIIT, Group Cycle, Boxing, dance based classes and the newest and most outrageous training techniques like training like primates and yoga on a surfboard. All while being treated to a live DJ on select nights. Sounds irresistable right? That’s because it is. You’ll thank me later!
LOCATION: Multiple locations across central London including Farringdon, Victoria, Old Street, Bank, Holborn, Westfield Statford, and Westfield Shepherds Bush.
PRICE: Gymbox is members only meaning you can’t pay per class but classes are free as part of the membership cost.
AMENITIES: At time of writing, all locations have plentiful showers with shampoo/conditioner and hair dryers. BYO hair straighteners and plug in to a spare socket! Towels are free and handed out at reception.
GOOD FOR: Getting seriously sweaty and losing yourself in the moment; the first time I ever went here I described it as an underground nightclub with a great bass and punch bags. Endorphins are not even optional, they are a promise. Try Rumble for boxing style training, Ride for indoor cycling to the beat or Reshape for a toning and cardio workout based around treadmill and the floor (weights and body weight exercises).
LOCATION: St Mary’s Axe, Broadgate
PRICE: £20 per class (other options available if you bulk buy a set of classes)
AMENITIES: At time of writing, all locations have plentiful showers with shampoo/conditioner and hair dryers, deoderant, cotton wool, refridgerated hand towels and facial cleanser / moisturiser… sweat towels are also available for use during the class. Shower towels are free. (we <3 you 1Rebel!).
adidas Studio LDN
GOOD FOR: Beginners and fit freaks alike, but best of all – it’s FREE! Offering a range of classes from ballet barre to pilates and box tone HIIT classes the adidas studio LDN on Brick Lane is a must visit if you want to get your sweat on with a group of likeminded motivated individuals. I went on a Friday night, dripped out a whole week’s worth of mascara and have no regrets!
LOCATION: Brick Lane
PRICE: FREE. You just need to sign up with adidas Women on Facebook and you’ll receive automatic updates on Facebook Messenger.
AMENITIES: At time of writing, there are limited showers and you’ll need to BYO towel, shampoo/conditioner and sweat towel if you need one too!
GOOD FOR: They say ‘we train as one’ and they mean it! Great for comradery, making new fitness buddies and feeling the strength of training with other likeminded people. Not only that but the circuit style workouts, based around moving to different UN1Ts on the floor are sweat-inducing to say the least. Hi endorphins!
LOCATION: London Bridge, Fulham
PRICE: £20 per class (be sure to check out their Intro offer of £20 for 7 days of 7 sessions. Other payment options when you bulk buy a set of classes)
AMENITIES: At time of writing, there a 2 showers and a small changing room with 2 hairdryers and 1 pair of hair straighteners. Sweat hand towels are free for the class. If you’re on the 7 day Intro offer pass, you’ll need to pay for the shower towel, otherwise it’s available to those who are paying full price per class.
